Diarrhoeal diseases pose a major problem in piglet rearing; they result in economic losses due to the increased use of medication and reduced weight gainin animals during the fattening period (stunted growth). The increased use of medication always carries the risk of germs becoming resistant.


Diarrhea is a symptom that can have many different causes. A distinction should be made between non-infectious factors, e.g. dietary changes, lack of stable hygiene, stress factors such as overcrowding, vaccination management of the sows, colostrum quality and supply, and infectious factors caused by specific diarrheal pathogens or subclinical carrier animals being introduced to a herd.

 

Among the main pathogens causing piglet diarrhoea are the Rotavirus and Clostridium perfringens. Cryptosporidium parvum is also pathogenic for pigs, often causing a secondary infection. Both single and mixed infections occur with varying degrees of disease severity.

 

Solely on the basis of clinical symptoms, it is virtually impossible to identify the diarrheal pathogens involved.
